Tattoo Removal Options

The removal of a tattoo is often thought of as being a very painful process. Although the process may have been very painful in the past, the technology of today offers safe and relatively pain free methods of removing tattoos. Currently, there are two options to remove tattoos that are rapidly becoming more and more popular – laser technology and pulsed light technology.

Technicaly both methods are light based technology and use light energy to destroy the ink in the tattoo, it is just the type of light that they use to breakdown the ink that makes the difference. The laser is usually a hotter light and can be more painful then the pulsed light.

The way they work is that the light reacts with the ink and frees it from the skin and breaks it up into such small pieces that your immune system actually collects the microscopic particles and removes them from your body.

The laser removal is often described as a good sunburn or having hot grease splashed on your skin. While the pulsed light is described as a warming sensation or a mild sunburn. Both method have been described as the same or less painful then getting the tattoo applied.

With laser removal you will often need 5 to 20 visits and the price can vary from $200 to $1000 per visit. So you can see that this can be an expensive proposition.

The pulsed light is usually charged per pulse, with prices from $3 to $10 per pulse and you can get 100's of pulses per visit. The good news is that it usually takes fewer visits to get the tattoo removed.

Both treatments will start with a gel being applied to the area that is scheduled to be removed. This gel will work to cool and conduct the energy of the light to the tattoo ink. Then a wand like tool is used to apply the laser light or the pulsed light. The ink asorbs the energy and actually breaks down to micro particles that you body asorbs.

Both of these treatments will remove the tattoo design but you have to remember that there might still be a remnant from the tattoo. This is a slight discoloration of the skin where the tattoo was. How much this show depends upon you and your skin and can vary greatly from person to person. Make sure you ask the doctor about remnants.

If you’ve been thinking about having a tattoo removed you should consider both light and laser based procedures. Keep in mind that they are both expensive, and both impose risks. Even though both procedures do offer ways to have your tattoo removed, you’ll need to think long and hard before you make a final decision.

There are other surgical methods that consist of using abrasion to actually remove the layers of skin that are inked but these will definitely leave a mark behind and is much more painful when healing then either the laser removal or the pulsed light removal.

There are also creams that are "supposed" to remove your tattoo. These are not cheap but they are no where near the cost of getting laser removal or pulsed light removal. I have never heard of anyone ever having this work and I can't find any independent reports of it working, which has me thinking that it they are a scam. But if you really want to get rid of a tattoo and you can't afford any other removal method then you might want to shell out the money to try one or two of these creams and see if they actually help.
