To get a tattoo artist to create a custom image for you it can cost you $150 so if you can get one for free online, why not?

Well to start with, to get the best quality tattoo you need to have the design in two parts the stencil and a color reference.

The tattoo stencil is basically the outline and the highlights of the tattoo. This is usually turned into a transfer and applied to your skin before the tattoo is inked.

From the application on your skin the tattoo artist creates the hard lines that distinguish the tattoo and make it stand out they way it should.

After this is inked in by the tattoo artist he will use the color reference to fill in the colors for your tattoo.

Now, you might be wondering why can’t a tattoo artist create the stencil from any image you have?

The answer to that is, he can, but the odds are that he will loose definition of some of the finer lines when he tries to create it. This isn’t a fault with the artist this is because when you are working with a single image the colors tend to blend with the definition lines. This has a tendency to blur the final image that shows in your tattoo.

A lot of people will say that to get a custom tattoo created is too expensive for them. I look at it this way, this is an image you will have on you for the rest of your life, is $150 too expensive to make sure you are getting the best image you can for the next 10, 20, 30, 70 years?

There are services online that sell tattoo designs with the stencil and color reference for reasonable prices. One good example of this is Tattoo Johnny you can browse through the thousands of designs that come with both the stencil and color reference. If you can’t afford the $150 for your design you should be able to afford the $9 to $25 for a design.

I would also advise you to test your tattoo before you have it inked on you.

Now with all that said if you can get a free tattoo design that comes with separate stencils and color reference in a design you like then you are probably in good shape. The trick is to find a free one that you like. Remember this is an image that you will have for the rest of your life, don’t settle for something you aren’t in love with.
