Knowing where you want to put your tattoo is very necessary, and you should definitely make up your mind about this before you go ahead and shop for designs. After all, what’s the point of picking out an incredibly wicked band design if you decide you want to tattoo your chest, right?

Anyway, there are numerous considerations that play around in the minds of most people who are looking to place a tattoo. Out of all of these, a number stand out in particular, so let’s go over them and see if we can’t help you hammer out your own issues:

1. Professionalism

While it may look really nice to have a Mike Tyson type tattoo on your cheek, the fact of the matter is that it isn’t going to look very professional, and if you’re living in this world, then it might not be a good idea to get a tattoo someplace that is too obvious. Instead, put your tattoo somewhere that won’t be noticed, such as your shoulders, back, chest, and…. anything at all really.

2. Pain Factor

As you probably well know, different places can hurt in different amounts, and the pain factor often does play a big role in deciding where to put your new tattoo. For women, the least painful areas are the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and shoulders, whereas for men it consists of the buttocks, arms, and back.

After you’ve considered these two factors, you should take a step back and decide on your options. Ask yourself what area you’d prefer, and what area you feel would fit your newfound criteria too. Then, once you’ve decided, go on ahead and pick a tattoo!

If you happen to be Caucasian, you can afford to stop reading now as you’ll be pleased to find out that pretty much every color will work on your skin.

Suffice to say, the problem of color and skin is one that is faced mostly by tan or dark skin tones. What happens with a tattoo is that the ink is not coloring the surface of the skin directly, it is coloring a couple of layers beneath the surface and allowing the skin on top to heal over it in time. As such, you’re actually viewing the ink of your tattoo through the skin itself.

For those with light skin tones, this isn’t a big problem seeing as white skin is transparent and so any color will show through as clear as day. However, for those with dark skin, the pigmentation within your skin will mean that a layer of dark skin grows on top of the ink, thus masking it and hiding it away from sight.

Of course, it does depend how dark exactly your skin is. If you’re only tanned, you’ll find that by using brighter colors, you’re able to let the color shine through your skin anyway. Unfortunately if you really are very dark there are few options that would allow any sort of color to show through, at least for now.

All said and done though, you could still get an incredibly cool tattoo if you have dark skin, you should just steer clear of the colors that many others use. Instead, opt for gray or black ink that would really bring out the best in your skin and show itself off to perfection.

By finding out what colors will work on your skin, you should be able to pick a design that suits those colors, and not waste time looking at designs that simply aren’t going to fit the bill due to your skin tone. After all, who needs them anyway when you could get an exciting tattoo in your own right still!

When you’re deciding to get a tattoo, you should remember that you’re deciding to permanently put something on your skin that’s going to be with you for the rest of your life. As such, the options that you face in terms of design must take that into account – you’re not just choosing a design for yourself right now, but rather you’re choosing a design that you’re going to live with for the rest of your life.

Nowadays, there are certainly no shortage of design options. From tribal designs to portraits, the list of patterns and available art just goes on and on. Some people even get their own custom art designed specifically for their tattoo, making it all the more unique as opposed to other tattoos that generally end up looking similar.

When choosing your design, you need to look even deeper than just the pattern that you’re opting for.

Depending on your skin tone, you may find that you’re only able to use certain colors of ink. Sure, you could try to use others, but the tattoo would probably not turn out the way that you envisioned, and you’d be permanently reminded of that fact.

Similarly, certain types of tattoos work better with certain areas, and so you’re definitely going to have to figure out exactly where on your body you want to place the tattoo itself before you start leafing through designs and trying to pick the one that you feel is the coolest of the lot.

What we’re driving at is that there are a lot of choices that need to be make when it comes to picking a tattoo design and so you shouldn’t rush into it before you’re ready. Take your time, look around, and when you do finally go over the choices before you again – be sure of what you decide.

Although getting a tattoo in a foreign script of a country that you’re visiting sounds very cool, you should be wary. Many times, people have ended up getting raw deals when they got a tattoo that they didn’t understand, and only later realized how wrong the tattoo that they had done actually was.

Of course, by that point in time its too late!

Here’s the bottom line: If you really have your heart set on getting a tattoo in a foreign language, be sure to do your research first and get second opinions if possible. Don’t just jump into it unless you’d like to find out that the Chinese characters that should have spelt out your name actually ended up spelling out ‘smelly fish’ or something like that.

To avoid falling victim to these problems, what you need to do is make certain that you fully understand the meaning behind whatever foreign language you’ve opted for. Granted, this could mean pouring over the internet and various dictionaries, but very often you’ll find that all you really need to do is ask.

Ask the people at your hotel, ask waiters at a restaurant. Ask anyone and everyone you encounter whether or not the foreign language characters that you’re interest in really mean what you think that they mean.

If you find that the overwhelming majority answer yes, then go ahead and get the tattoo. However, if you find that it isn’t what you expected, it is about time that you figured out what the tattoo you desire really does look like, and then get that!

Nowadays, out of the wealth of tattoos that are available, there are so many different design types from so many different cultural influences. Still, the fact of the matter is that if you want a really cool tattoo that stands out from the crowd of others, then you’re probably looking for something that is that little bit different, and that little bit more unique.

Take tribal designs for example – nowadays they are all the rage but their designs don’t really stand out for the most part. However, there are a few tribal designs that really do go the extra mile, and more often than not these are the result of unique efforts by various tattoo artists.

Due to the fact that a lot of people are searching for something ‘different’, the number of custom designed tattoos have certainly increased lately. However, at the end of the day, it all boils down to the artist in question, and how creatively he or she can come up with a tattoo that is that little bit different.

It helps if you have a rough idea of what exactly you want when you approach a tattoo artist. Most people have a central theme, or a rough idea that they would like followed. Some even have more specific ideas and try to detail them to the tattoo artist so that he or she can follow those ideas as closely as possible.

End of the day, if you want a really cool tattoo that is completely and entirely your own, then custom designs are definitely the way to go. Sure, they might be more expensive than the standard varieties of tattoos but if you pick the right tattoo artist, you can rest easy knowing that you’re going to be getting your money’s worth.
